What is a Gauge Block and how is it Used?

A gauge block is a precision-machined block that is tailored for calibrating measuring equipment and for use as a precision measuring devices. Also referred to as “Jo blocks”, (Not Joe Blogs!) because of their designer, a Swedish fellow named Carl Johansson, they are manufactured in sets containing many different sizes.
·         This is so they can be combined in various ways to make up practically any wished for measurement, up to several inches (1 inch = 2.5 cm).
Commonly made from top grade steel or carbides that can withstand wear and damage, a gauge block is machined with two sides that are perfectly flat and parallel to each other.

Different Grades of Precision

This type of precision measurement technology is made in different grades, all according to precision. The lowest grades of gauge blocks can have a precision tolerance of somewhere near 25 millionths of a meter, which is almost equivalent to a fine strand of human hair.
Whereasthe highest grades of gauge blocks have precision tolerance as low as 0.05 millionths of a meter, which is a minute fraction of the thickness of a strand of spider web.

What is meant by Wringing?

Wringing is a method offastening these blocks together and involves inserting a very fine layer of oil in between the blocks, which then causes them to stick to each other like they were glued.
·         It is possible to separate a block by gently sliding them apart, but will indeed take a considerable amount of force
·         A stack of gauge blocks which have been perfectly wrung together can easily support their own weight without any falling apart
It still is not fully comprehended how such a procedure actually works, but it has been said that it is a combination of molecular attraction, surface tension of the wring film, and even a vacuum which has been created between blocks.

Lapping Explained

What is known as “lapping”, is a kind of grinding and polishing procedure, and is used to make the surface of a gauge block intensely flat and smooth.
·         For settings of lower grades, the thickness of the wring film is so tiny as not to be of importance in measurements
With regards to the higher settings, for more precise grades of gauge blocks, the length of the  block is intentionally reduced by the thickness of one wring film, so as when they are combined, the thickness of the layers of the wring film is not compromised by any amount of measurement.
